About This Spot

Stepping into Ding Tai Fung in Markham feels like sliding into a comfortable rhythm where the hum of quiet conversation blends effortlessly with the clatter of wooden chopsticks and the soft chatter from the open kitchen. It’s a place where time slows just enough to savor the warm, familiar bustle of a neighborhood Shanghainese restaurant — welcoming, purposeful, yet relaxed.

The space strikes a harmonious balance between casual and refined. Families, friends, and quiet couples mingle under soft lighting, every table offering its own shared moment over steaming baskets of delicate dumplings and carefully crafted plates. Watching the kitchen team hand-shape each piece of dough through a glass partition adds an unexpected depth to the experience, inviting you to appreciate the care behind every bite.

Here, the menu unfolds not as a checklist but as an unfolding story of tradition and flavor—where the silky, broth-filled soup dumplings glide effortlessly onto your plate, and the vibrant stir-fried string beans with minced pork add a touch of boldness alongside the comforting nostalgia of Shanghai-style noodles. The aromas invite you to lean in, the textures coax you to linger, and each dish feels like a quietly celebrated chapter of home cooking elevated with precision.

Though the restaurant can fill quickly, especially on busy nights or holidays, the hum of the dining room never feels rushed but rather shared — a collective enjoyment of good food and company. It’s a spot where the familiar becomes special not through spectacle, but through steady, genuine craft and a welcoming pulse that invites regulars and new visitors alike to return, time and again.

For those seeking a taste of authentic Shanghainese and Taiwanese comfort without pretense, Ding Tai Fung offers a sincere, quietly memorable meal that feels like a caring hand extended across the table.

Great Shanghainese place in Markham with the best hot and sour soup. Soup dumplings that are worth driving from downtown for. And the Shanghai noodles and string beans were excellent too.

A fabulous place to visit with family and friends. Order anything and you will fall in love with the dishes. Reserve your table in advance specially if you are going on a holiday or special event day. Wait time could be longer due to rush. Service could also be impacted due to rush. Very good and highly recommend for large groups. A little expensive too but worth it.

I’m so glad to say the food here is just as delicious as it was five years ago! Ding Tai Fung hasn’t missed a beat — the quality, flavors, and consistency are all still top-notch. Their original soup dumplings are juicy, flavorful, and perfectly made every time. If you're craving authentic and expertly crafted dumplings, this place never disappoints!

It is a famous brand, but I think it has no relationship with the famous brand originated from Taiwan. Don’t know where to start. We arrived on a Saturday evening around 5:30. It is 70% occupied, the waiters were cleaning some tables and collecting dishes, making very very loud noise, I mean really loud. It seems they don’t care about the customers dining there. We were quickly seated after the table was cleaned. We ordered some soup dumpling and fried dumpling. The soup dumpling was not too bad, holding up the standard, but the fried dumpling, it is not Shanghai style. I don’t know what kind of style, it is just not to our liking. We also ordered seafood soup, there was a lot stuff and veggie inside, but soup was bland, if you don’t like oily Chinese dish, order it. The meat had no taste, and too much fat though. Anyway, maybe we didn’t order the right thing. But the noise is something we cannot accept. It is a beautiful restaurant, it could have a decent dining experience if they pay more attention to the service.

If Shanghai has "Din Tai Fung," Markham has Xiao Long Bao! The Shanghai noodles here are exceptionally chewy and delicious—definitely a standout dish. It’s also quite entertaining to watch them handcraft the dumplings and noodles through the glass window while you wait. My only "complaint" is that I end up overeating every single time I visit! But the good news is that even when I take the leftovers home, the dim sum still tastes amazing the next day, even when eaten cold. This is one of my go-to dim sum spots whenever I’m in the Markham area. Highly recommended!
